How Early Should You Leave for the Airport in Istanbul?
A practical timing guide for Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen, built from the journeys we drive every day.

The honest answer
For an international flight from Istanbul Airport, leave the city centre three and a half hours before departure. For a domestic flight, two and a half hours is usually enough. Those numbers are not padding — they come from the two variables nobody controls: traffic on the E-5 or the O-7, and the length of the terminal walk.
Why three and a half hours
- 45 to 70 minutes of driving from most central neighbourhoods
- 5 minutes to get out of the car and reach the terminal doors
- 30 to 45 minutes for check-in and bag drop on a busy evening
- 20 to 40 minutes for passport control and security
- 20 minutes of walking to a far gate, which is normal at IST
Add a little slack and the three-and-a-half-hour rule stops feeling excessive.
The time of day matters more than the distance
A Tuesday at 11:00 is not a Friday at 17:30. Between 16:00 and 20:00 the bridges and the airport approach road can double your journey. Morning departures before 09:00 are usually the calmest.
Sabiha Gökçen is a different calculation
If your flight leaves from Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side, the drive from the European side can take anywhere from 50 minutes to two hours. From Kadıköy or Ataşehir it is a short, predictable run. From Levent or Beşiktaş, leave four hours before departure and use the motorway crossing.
If your flight is very early
Before 06:00 there is no traffic and the drive is quicker than you think — but the terminal is busy with the first wave of departures. Keep the same three-and-a-half-hour margin and let the quiet road work in your favour.
What we build into your booking
When you book a transfer with us, the pick-up time we suggest already includes the drive, the terminal walk and a buffer. You will see it in the summary before you pay, and you can move it earlier with one message.
