Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen: How to Choose

Two airports, two very different journeys into the city. A short guide to picking the right flight and planning the right transfer.

Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen: How to Choose

The one-line version

Istanbul Airport (IST) sits on the European side and handles most long-haul traffic. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side and is dominated by low-cost carriers. Your hotel's location should decide which one you fly into.

If you are staying on the European side

Beşiktaş, Şişli, Nişantaşı, Sultanahmet, Taksim, Levent: fly into IST. A transfer takes 45 to 70 minutes. Coming from SAW instead means crossing the Bosphorus, which can turn a 40-minute drive into two hours at the wrong time of day.

If you are staying on the Asian side

Kadıköy, Moda, Ataşehir, Üsküdar, Maltepe: SAW is closer and cheaper to reach, typically 25 to 45 minutes. Flying into IST is fine, but budget the crossing.

The bridge question

There are three bridges and a tunnel, and all of them have opinions about your schedule. A driver who knows the city picks the crossing that is actually moving at that hour, which is not something a first-time visitor can do from the passenger seat.

What a transfer looks like from each

From IST: driver inside the arrivals hall, 45 to 70 minutes to the European centre. From SAW: the same meet-and-greet, 25 to 45 minutes on the Asian side, or up to 90 minutes if you are heading to Europe.

Booking tip

Tell us the flight number rather than the airport code alone. Airport codes get mixed up in itineraries, flight numbers do not — and the driver will be standing in the right terminal.
