Lisbon in a Day: Hills, Viewpoints and a Driver Who Knows Them
Seven hills, one tram everyone photographs, and a route that avoids both. A private car day in Lisbon, planned honestly.

Lisbon is beautiful and vertical
Every itinerary looks simple on a map and brutal on foot. Alfama climbs, Bairro Alto climbs, and the tram everyone queues for is as much a tourist experience as a transport solution. A car with a driver does not change the hills; it changes how many of them you climb.
Morning: Belém before the coaches
Start at 09:00 in Belém. The monastery opens early and the queue triples by eleven, when the tour buses arrive from the coast. The pastéis de nata shop on the corner is worth the ten minutes you will spend in line — do it before the monuments, not after.
Late morning: the river road to the centre
Your driver takes the riverside route back, past the bridge and the Alcântara dock, and drops you at Praça do Comércio. From there, the Baixa is flat, which after two days of Lisbon feels like a gift.
Lunch: not on the tourist square
Ask to be taken to Campo de Ourique or Estrela rather than eating beside the river. The food is better and the price is written on the wall. The car waits, which means lunch does not have a time limit imposed by a taxi rank.
Afternoon: the viewpoints, in the right order
Senhora do Monte first, then Graça, then the Portas do Sol if the light is good. Doing these three in one car takes ninety minutes. Doing them on foot and by tram takes half a day, and you will skip one.
Evening: fado without the transfer problem
Fado houses cluster in Alfama where the streets are too narrow for a car and too steep for much patience at midnight. A chauffeur drops you at the nearest accessible corner, takes your number, and waits for the message that says the evening is over.
If you are flying out the same day
Lisbon airport is fifteen minutes from the centre and twenty from Belém, and there is a fixed price to both. Tell us your terminal and the time you want to be there rather than the departure time — we work backwards from the deadline, not forwards from dinner.
Prefer to have it arranged for you?
Send us your flight, dates and luggage; we confirm the car and the price before you land.
